San Francisco Labor Council Passes Resolution Calling for Josh's Release

March 13, 2007

Richard Knee

By a unanimous vote among those present, San Francisco Labor Council delegates Monday night passed a resolution calling for the immediate release of freelance blogger and videographer Josh Wolf from prison, and urging California state legislators and Congressional representatives to back a federal shield law for journalists.

Again, a big thanks goes to Robert Haaland. As he brought a similar resolution that the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee approved on Feb. 28, he authored the one that received a resounding thumbs-up from the labor council. Thanks also to SFLC vice president Howard Wallace, who presented Monday's motion on Haaland's behalf.

The text:

"WHEREAS, Josh Wolf is an independent journalist in the City and County of San Francisco who has become the longest jailed journalist for contempt in United States history and whose incarceration causes great damage to the First Amendment and to freedom of the press in the United States, and

"WHEREAS, 31 states including California have shield laws upholding the rights of journalists to protect the secrecy of their sources and unpublished information, and

"WHEREAS, Josh Wolf has shown uncommon valor in his principled defense of First Amendment rights, proving through his steadfast commitment that he will not be coerced, and for such actions has been awarded the highest honors of the Society of Professional Journalists,

"THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the San Francisco Labor Council urges the US Attorney to cease its prosecution of Josh Wolf, requests his immediate release from prison, and urges Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to rescind the subpoena with which he was served; and

"BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the San Francisco Labor Council urges that the California State Legislature and the Congressional delegation support the passage of an inclusive and robust State and Federal Shield Law that protects independent journalists, does not contain significant loopholes, and protects online journalists; and

"BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that copies of this resolution shall be sent to the regional US Attorney, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, and our State and Federal elected officials.

"Submitted by Robert Haaland, SEIU 1021, on March 12, 2007."

A friendly amendment declaring the labor council's intent to encourage all delegates to become active on these matters also received a unanimous nod.
